Northeast Neighborhoods
About the Neighborhood
When the I-35W bridge collapsed on August 1, 2007, it cut off a main artery to one of Minneapolis's most beloved areas—the Northeast neighborhoods. Anchored by Central Avenue to the east and south, Stinson Avenue to the west and 30th Avenue to the north, this is home to vibrant shopping, arts and dining districts.
What's New
As a result of the bridge collapse, the Northeast neighborhoods, such as the Audubon Park neighborhood, have seen a sharp decline in business; many independent shops and cafés now risk survival. As Minneapolis City Council Paul Ostrow explains, "Some people have been discouraged from coming to the area because they think it's harder to get to, or that traffic will be a challenge. But once they're here, they find it's still a great place to do some shopping, eat at a restaurant, or to take advantage of the variety of services in the area."
The neighborhoods are connected to Downtown, the West Bank and the rest of the city by many bridges, including the Lowry Avenue, West Broadway, Plymouth Avenue, Hennepin Avenue, Third Avenue and Washington Avenue bridges, all of which are good local alternatives to I-35W. See a detour map.
Things to Do
Do your part to support the Northeast neighborhoods and have fun while you're at it. Steeped in Eastern-European heritage, the area is enjoying a cultural revival as a fun, funky place to dine, shop and play. Kitschy, friendly bars flank nearly every corner, and upscale shops and local galleries form unique intersections of style and creativity. Cuisine options run the gamut, from melt-in-your-mouth pot roast to organic elixirs and Moroccan lamb sausage ... whatever you're craving, you'll find it in the Northeast neighborhoods.
